Bitter Truth of Education: Termination of 25,752 School Jobs in West Bengal

A significant upheaval occurred in the West Bengal education sector in April 2025 when the Supreme Court of India and the Calcutta High Court ordered the annulment of 25,752 appointments made by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) through the 2016 recruitment ((The Times Of India, 2025). A massive fraud that jeopardized the integrity of the hiring process for both teaching and non-teaching personnel at government-aided schools led to this judgement.

  1. Background of the Recruitment

This particular recruitment was conducted by the WBSSC in 2016 for Group C and Group D employees as well as posts in Classes IX-XII. Filling openings in government-run and government-aided schools throughout the state was the aim. However, as accusations of bribery, corruption, and document manipulation started to emerge in the following years, a number of legal investigations were launched.

2. Nature of the Scam

·       Investigations revealed several irregularities.

·       Tampering of Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets.

·       Appointments made against non-existent vacancies.

·       Backdoor entries facilitated through bribes.

·       Unjustified marks awarded during interviews.

Besides this, In 2022, Several officials, including then Education Minister Partha Chatterjee and senior WBSSC personnel, were arrested and charged in job scam (The Hindu, 2022). He has been questioning and sent to custody for 2 days. Unfortunately, the result was unexpected and unchanged. Its feel very disheartened that we have to see the devastating circumstances knowing what is right and wrong.

3. Judicial Intervention

Following years of judicial examination, the Calcutta High Court declared the entire recruiting procedure illegal in 2025, stating that it was impossible to discern between appointments that were fraudulent and those that were based on merit because the scheme was so pervasive (The Indian Express, 2025). Later, the Supreme Court affirmed this ruling, highlighting the fact that obtaining a public job illegally cannot be used to keep it. “On 2025, April, The Supreme Court held that assistant teacher candidates untainted in the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) recruitment process can continue teaching, provided the West Bengal government completes fresh recruitments by December 31

Chief Minister Mamta Bannerjee welcomes the development and stated she is happy with these results and commit to resolve these issues as soon as possible.

4. Current Status

Total Affected: 25,753 appointments cancelled.

Judicial Relief: The Supreme Court allowed teachers deemed “untainted” to continue temporarily until a fresh recruitment process concludes (expected by December 2025).

State’s Role: The government has been directed to release a list distinguishing legitimate candidates from those who benefited from corruption. This list is still pending.

Public Response: Many affected candidates are protesting the blanket cancellation, demanding an opportunity to prove their merit.

5. Why This Matters?

This case is noteworthy because it demonstrates how widespread dishonesty in hiring not only erodes public confidence but also upends thousands of people's lives and careers. It also emphasises how crucial accountable and transparent recruiting practices are in the public sector.

The court's ruling is grounded in honesty and the law, but it also serves as a reminder that our hiring practices desperately need to be changed. Such incidents will inevitably recur in the absence of strong checks and accountability, with dire repercussions for both individuals and institutions.
